Teaching Children About Money Tips

Posted by Derrick Janson on August 25th, 2010

There is a large proportion of society, just like myself, who grew up in a family under welfare. We lived in government subsidized housing estate wheremost people in the immediate community were unemployed or blue collar workers. As you can probably guess, financial education for kids was not existent in my childhood. I still remember my economic teacher in high school telling us that more than 80% of us will end up like our parents… trapped under the poverty line. Well, at the beginning, I didn’t want to believe it but after finishing high school andonly about 10 people in our year making it touniversity and it was not hard to see history repeating itself.

In my early 20s I met a neighbor of mine who described to me that her sister is on-par with living the life her mum had once lived. She is a single mum with 2 kids to different fathers and is dependent on welfare.

The ultimate goal of trying to escape the poverty trap seems to me like every kids goal in our society back then, but obviously it wasn’t a dream for many. As you can see financial education for kids was not top priority at all back then.

You are reading this because you have a desire to dream beyond your pass and also teaching children about money is one of the most important things you want to do. Congratulation on making that critical decision to step out of the poverty trap and help your child do so too! Reflecting on my friend’s sister’s situation I thinkit was the simple goal that she set “to be able to have the life her mum gave her was good enough for her”. We need to know that being satisfied with what we are given is a great learning experience but it’s not what will drive us to succeed and achieve potential that is easily achieved if we put our mind to it.

Teaching kids about money will not only create a positive experience but also help us review our daily priorities.

To live above the poverty line requires us to:

1. Teaching money to children by changing mindsets
Just because you come from a poor family does not mean you need to stay there forever. Confess “I am not poor” repeatedly to yourselfdaily so you start believing it, is a powerful mind exercise that can build confidence and vision for your life. Repeating the words “we are poor” to your children and yourself will only tell them exactly that. Teaching kids about money requires time and hard work on our part but those words “we are poor” only breed negativity to your child. If they ask for something you can’t afford at the moment, say “You can have that later when ________” it could be birthday, Christmas, after you get your pay rise, after they have saved enough from their pocket money. This always gives them time to learn if what they wanted was an impulse buy or something they really want.

2. Plan a Kids Budget wisely
Be accountable to yourself and your children that you will not live beyond your means. Setting this example to your children will help them do accordingly. This will teach them about a kids budget. Practice what you preach as children learn more from what you do than what you say. With governments and families all in big debt, credit being so readily available we need to be very wise with our money. Children these days think everything gets paid on the credit card. I have heard children answer back “just put it on the card mum” when their parent said “I don’t have any cash on me”. We need to be wise when we do use a credit card that we always pay it off in full when it’s due. We need to explain to our children that the plastic card does come with a statement at the end of the month and mum & dad need to pay it off with our savings. Not showing kids the complete picture distorts the truth from them and this will limit their understanding of money to an unhealthy state of free spending. You could create a kids budget so they can be wise with their money. Budgeting for kids is definitely an important topic when teaching money to children.

3. Look at different alternatives when teaching children about money
Look at alternative ways for your situation. If a holiday somewhere else is not a possibility at the moment because you do not have enough case, why not go camping in your back yard? Spring clean and see what is no longer needed and see if you can host a garage sale or sell it on e-bay for extra cash. Offer your services to your neighbors in the community. House cleaning and gardening work is a sought after job in different neighborhoods. If you can cook decently, why not offer this skill? Many families work long hours and are not prepared to make healthy nutritional food, it might be worth offering your service to them. Do you kike growing your own things? Plant your own vegetable garden will not only save you money at grocers but you can also sell your excess. Tomato off the vine is much sweeter than those at the shops. What you do are doing here is teaching kids about money by showing different ways to earn money.

4. Working at a second job
If the cost of living is just too high, you might need to get a second job on top of your first one. Look for casual or part time work that can assist with paying the bill. The financial education for kids is demonstrating you need to go through some hard times in order to meet the cost of living.

5. Second-hand
We live in a materialistic world and people buy for the sake of buying. Do your homework before you go out to make your next purchase. Second hand clothing stores stock many clothes that have never been worn before for a fraction of the price of brand new. Check out websites like eBay and look out for the old fashion garage sale and fete stores. Speak to friends when you want to buy something. Teaching children about money is about thinking about alternatives and sharing this idea with your child.

Learning A New Language

Posted by Courtney Peterson on August 4th, 2010

I cannot help smiling when I browse the Internet or I visit a book store and I see one of those language guides that say something like:”Learn Japanese in 7 days”. Trying to reduce the time a new language takes to learn it’s natural and everyone would like to do that.

But reducing it to a blink of an eye it’s a fairytale. It’s important to not throw yourself in a mindless quest like the one of looking for language guides that can teach you a language in one week, because such guides do not really exist. The only way is to learn the language properly and in time.

The best way to learn a new language is online. Of course, a real life course held by a teacher can be useful also, but such a course requires you to go to certain locations and most of the times you can’t decide your own schedule. It’s hard to go to such a class when you don’t feel well, you don’t fell like learning or you have other more important things to do. If you decide to learn a new language online then all these worries disappear. When you feel like learning you can simply click and continue the lesson you started yesterday.

You should try to divide your learning session in a couple of small parts over a longer period of time because it’s better to learn for one hour each day for 5 months than to learn 6 hours a day for one. Learning bit by bit will allow information to be remembered and understood easier and you won’t have to worry about tiredness or over-solicitation. Some people copy even learn a bit by listening to music on ipod, turning the ipod portable speakers at a reasonable level so they can carry on with other activities. You must not forget about this, failing to do so will return unfortunate results.

Learning and having fun at the same time is a real treat. If we thing something is amusing, then our brains will response by assimilating that information fast. If you don’t have a lot of free time and you don’t feel like starting an online course just yet, those 10 minutes of play during your lunch break will do all the difference. It’s obvious that you will take a lot longer to learn the respective language, but this doesn’t mean that it will be a lot of work.

Other Great Information: For some helpful purchasing activities, surf to http://babyboysclothes.us and discover resources related to (a) baby boy clothes.

The Ancient History Of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

Posted by Owen Jones on July 22nd, 2010

In the 18th. Century evidence of Neolithic man was discovered in the form of dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with obscure markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads, amongst other things. Unfortunately, although these things reside safely in the Museum of Cardiff, no one thought it worth excavating at the time and now residences stand on the sites.

An ancient Roman kitchen, complete with remains and utensils underwent a similar fate. In 1533, Leland was made the Kings Antiquary and was directed to make a tour of all places where records were held. This took him nine years and his description of the island was:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Vikings raided the coastline of south Wales in the Tenth Century often taking hostages from the monasteries, but they did not seek to settle the area. The island was known as the ‘Saints’ Retreat’ or the ‘Island of Saints’ for a long time. Later, in the Sixteenth Century, the island was used by smugglers and pirates and was known locally as the ‘Smugglers’ Fortress’. This occurred at the same time as Bristol, Britain’s second largest port, was growing rapidly.

Barry Island became the centre of piracy in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, the island was known as the Fortress of Knight. Knight was the top smuggler and pirate in the area and people were frightened of testifying against him, although he was also something of a local hero. His armed brig’s name was John O’ Combe. He was eventually moved on to Lundy Island, which he also turned into a fortress, although he and his successor, Arthur, still returned so often to Barry, that H.M. Customs requested the government to permanently post a cutter to Penarth and 60 light infantry to Barry.

The small seaside village of Rhoose, five miles from Barry, was so well-known for its wreckers that George II sent troops to break up them up. They landed at Aberthaw, just up the coast a bit further, “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. While digging out for the docks at Barry in the late nineteenth century, several large caves were filled in. They had probably been used by the pirates who were moved on in about 1850.

Finding The Best Online Colleges In 2010

Posted by Thomas Slaten on July 8th, 2010

Researching colleges can be difficult and overwhelming if you are unclear about what you need in an education. Deciding which are the best online colleges will first require that you find out which program interests you the most. You will also need to decide whether being accredited is important to you.

Being accredited is important because certain employment opportunities will not be available to you unless your degree comes from an accredited university. If you are really planning for the future, you might want to check with your dream employer to see what kind of requirements they hold for prospective employees. If you are learning just for the sake of personal knowledge, then I would recommend finding free college courses online. While they are not graded or accredited, you can read through actual college material for free and at your own pace.

Another point to keep in mind is how long you will be remaining at the particular school. Do you plan to transfer out to another college later on? If so, your credits will need to be transferable or all of your completed classes will be considered null and void by any future school counselors. Talking to a counselor first to make sure you can transfer credits from your degree program is something you don’t want to forget.

Class size is not really an issue when you attend school online, but it is necessary to have easy access to your professor. You may want to check with current and past students from any university you are considering, to see how the professors react to questions or concerns, and whether they do so in a timely manner. When you aren’t sitting in a classroom, you need to take steps to make sure you have the same accessibility, or close, that a traditional setting offers.

Support is huge when it comes from your family and friends, but when it comes from the school as well, then your motivation increases even more. Once you’ve had this kind of support, it’s hard to work without. Check to see if your considered university offers this system, and for how long. For even the best students, getting that phone call once a week goes a long way towards helping you reach your goals on time.

Of course, our main goal after graduating is to find work in our chosen fields. Before making a final choice on a college or university, look into the statistics of their graduates and how many are actually working–as well as how soon they are working. With this support behind you, you will find that navigating the world of employer requirements, resume distribution and interview practices becomes much easier, as a side benefit of years of experience that the college is sharing with you.

Attending school at any age is a big deal, but it’s more of a commitment when you’re older with a family. Finding the best online colleges that fit your goals is an important first step towards reaching a satisfying end to your education dreams. There are so many choices out there that it’s nearly impossible to find one that won’t work with your particular needs; it just takes a little dedicated time to do the proper research.

In this day and age, people do most of their stuff online, including college. So, what are the Best Online Colleges? We have a list of the Best Colleges Online that you may be interested in.

U.S. Military Corps Of Engineers Promotes Sustainability With Brand-new LEED Gold Building

Posted by Esther Alarcon on June 28th, 2010

In another example of the U.S. army leading the private world into a much healthier and much less fossil fuel dependent future, the U.S. Military Corps of Engineers is aiming to qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for the new high efficiency office building at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building was initially designed to satisfy a smaller standard but the Department of Defense has created a policy of going over and above minimal compliance with environmental regulations, in order to stimulate a lot more aggressive action on environmental security by the public area particularly in regard to climate change.

USACE Commanding General Lt. Gen. Robert Van Antwerp recently blogged regarding the Corps’s durability plan with a line coming from one of his predecessors: “Environmental honesty and beliefs must be more than an overlay. They must be a bone-deep part of our method of doing business.” Van Antwerp has also noted that climate change is actually “a very real concern that could have extremely real outcomes all over the world.” That doesn’t give much wiggle room for helping our troops in the drill baby drill ethos but then again, that’s the entire purpose.

The Actual Sustainability Link from Military to Civilian

Partly, the brand new building will serve as a highlight for new energy and water preservation plans that benefit the bottom line and can be used by businesses, industry, and establishments like universities and health care facilities. One showcase is a visitor facility which will have an energy cost-efficient eco-friendly roof practically covered with greenery to supply padding and relieve the “heat island” consequence. Green roofs are becoming common at government properties such as military bases and prisons, but they have yet to make considerable inroads somewhere else in the U.S. With a comparable objective in sight, the military is additionally showing energy efficient microgrid and solar power technology at a couple of other bases inside California as well as Hawaii.

Sustainability for Everyone

The new structure will make use of roughly 30 % less electricity as compared to conventional buildings, and about half the water. Even though some savings results from new construction methods, technology and materials, others derive from good sense answers which could effortlessly be used as retrofits on current buildings and grounds. For example, there’s no need for outdoor irrigation, because the landscaping design makes use just of drought resistant native plants. Low-flow water system fittings and energy efficient light bulbs are utilized throughout, and the usage of natural daylight is maximized by simply putting in cubicles with lower walls, that also helps air to circulate more efficiently.

Sustainability together with Alternate Transportation

The modern complex will also check the ability of urban planners to pull more people out of their own automobiles and into mass transport plus some other alternatives. The complex was built to fulfill recommendation #133 of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, and when completed in 2011 it’ll move thousands of new office workers into Alexandria, a location that already struggles with excessive over-crowding.

In case you really care about your future, be eco friendly. We could do this by utilizing eco friendly products and engaging in environment helpful pursuits. We only have one world to live in so let us stand up for this!
